The Moment Before the Change:
What Leads Clients to Ripple Ranch

Our team can help turn that pivotal moment into lasting healing. Discover how pre-treatment factors are addressed at Ripple Ranch, as revealed in our 2024 Clinical Outcomes Report, to enhance your recovery.

Starting Treatment at Ripple Ranch

For most clients, recovery doesn’t begin with treatment – it begins with a breaking point.

Sometimes it’s subtle, or sometimes it’s dramatic. But, for nearly everyone who walks through our doors, there’s a moment that shifts everything.

We track these moments, not to define our clients by their pain, but to better understand where their journey starts. And in 2024, those stories were clearer than ever.

The journey to recovery is unique and starts with a single, brave decision.

Reach out to Ripple Ranch today and take the first step towards a life of fulfillment and well-being.

What Happened Right Before Clients Came to Ripple Ranch?

In 2024, we continued tracking what triggered each client’s decision to seek treatment. The stories vary, but the patterns tell us a lot about where people are emotionally, physically, and socially just before they say, “I need help.”

2023 to 2024: Notable Trends

Here’s what changed from 2023 to 2024:

  • 67% of clients said they were simply tired of living this way, which is down from 76% in 2023, but still the #1 reason people seek help.
  • 49% were encouraged by family or friends to enter treatment, which was up from 47%. This shows more people are arriving with support behind them.
  • 45% became emotionally overwhelmed or scared by how they were feeling, which is up dramatically from 15%. This may be the most significant shift, as clients are coming in when emotions spiral beyond what they can manage alone.
  • 21% were hospitalized before coming to treatment, which is up slightly from 20%. Hospitalizations continue to act as a major wake-up call, especially when tied to physical health or overdose.

2023 to 2024: Breaking Down the Data

Beyond that, we also saw that:

  • 17% had talked about or attempted suicide, which is down from 21%. This is still far too high, but we’re seeing a slight decline in clients waiting until they reach the most dangerous mental health points.
  • 9% were arrested or jailed before entering, which is down from 11%.
  • 6% experienced an overdose, which is down from 7%.
  • 5% were caught driving under the influence, which is down from 7%.
  • 2% were court-ordered to treatment, which is unchanged from 2023.
  • 3% experienced alcohol poisoning, which is unchanged from 2023.
  • 4% were involuntarily committed, which is up from 0%. This is a small but notable increase that reflects more serious mental health crises prompting emergency intervention.
  • 17% listed “Other” as their primary reason, which is up slightly from 15%.

What These Numbers Tell Us

This data is a snapshot of the emotional, medical, and social turbulence clients experience before they reach for help.

Some trends from 2024 stand out, including:

  • Emotional overwhelm surged, as 45% of clients came to treatment after becoming scared or upset with how they were feeling, up from just 15% in 2023.
  • More people came because someone cared – family or friend intervention nudged more clients into care than ever before.
  • Reports of being “Tired of living this way” dropped slightly, but still remains the most common reason people seek help.
  • Crisis events like suicide attempts, overdose, and DUI decreased modestly – a hopeful signal that people may be seeking help earlier.

From Breakdown to Breakthrough

Here’s the truth: not everyone who comes to Ripple Ranch hits rock bottom first, but most hit a moment of emotional truth. A moment where staying the same was scarier than the idea of changing.

For some, it’s waking up in a hospital. For others, it’s a plea from a loved one. And for many, it’s simply looking in the mirror and realizing: this can’t be it.

How Ripple Ranch Responds to That Moment

No matter what brings someone here, our job is to honor that moment and help them build from it.

That means we provide:

  • Immediate safety and stabilization, especially for those coming from crisis
  • CBT and DBT to build emotional clarity, distress tolerance, and coping skills
  • Group support that reminds clients they’re not alone
  • Family involvement, so no one has to recover in isolation
  • Hiking and mindfulness practices to create space for reflection and self-connection in nature

Because the moment someone says “I need help” might be the most courageous act of their life, and we’re here to honor that.

The Shift in 2024 for Overall Health and Healing

This past year’s numbers show us that fewer people are waiting until the most dangerous moment to get support. More are showing up because they’re emotionally overwhelmed, not just medically or legally cornered.

That’s progress.

But whether someone arrives after a hospital stay or a quiet breakdown in their own home, we treat every entry point with the same respect and urgency.

Your lowest point doesn’t have to define you. It can be the moment everything begins to change.
